World Book Day:

Last week we celebrated World book day on March 1st.  
I read various books from around the world  to students such as 'Siesta' from Spain by Ginger Floglesong,  'The Colours Of Us' by Karen Katz, an 'Tom Tom' by Rosmary Sullivan. We looked at how, although we are different, we are all Special, and God loves all of us no matter what colour, shape or size we are. 

 

We did craft activities from around the world and on Thursday we had a special guest. Mrs Hemblyn came in and showed us lots of interesting and fun items from PNG. She was dressed in her tradditional costume and showed us different kinds of bags and what they are used for.  The children were mezmorized by what she had to say.

Library Lovers Day 2012:

Library lovers day is a day dedicated for all us lovers of a good book. Last week was the first ever Library Lovers Day here at Groves.  Even though, officially, it is 'a day', we extended it to a fun and exciting week.

 One of the events students participated in was 'a blind date with a book'.  Students found this exciting and enjoyable. Books were put into brown paper bags with a red heart and students had the choice of choosing or being tempted to choose one of these bags to borrow for that week. We had a variety of activities in the library at lunch times including them receiving  a red chocolate, sticker and library lovers bookmark when they borrowed a book.    

 On the Friday we celebrated a special morning tea for all  the teachers to launch the National Year of Reading.

Reading is a way for students to open their mind to new and exciting possibilities. It helps them to explore stories from countries around the world and lets them see different cultures. Reading  inspires children's minds to explore different places and creates imagination, provides a framework for learning and enables the reader to gain knowledge through a variety of materials.


Therefore, the library wants to help you to encourage a love of reading in your child. 

Some ways of promoting reading are:

1. Read to your child every night: This way it encourages your child to have good vocabulary skills and a demonstration of expression in their voices.

2. Read your self: This will encourage your child to read when they see you  do the same. Lead by example.

3.Here is a way to use your newspaper to encourage reading: a scavenger hunt.

Give your child a list of things to find in today's newspaper. Here are some ideas:

A map of Australia.A picture of your child's favourite athlete.
The temperature in the city where a family member lives.
Three words that begin with "w".
A movie that is playing at a nearby theatre

4. Give books to your child as presents so that they can start their own library.

5. Scout for things your children might like to read. Use their interests and hobbies as starting points.

6.Play games that are reading-related. Check your closet for spelling games played with letter tiles or dice, or board games that require players to read spaces, cards, and directions.
